Call for papers: Community, Work & Family Special Issue
Advancing Equality at Work and Home: Possibilities for Change and New Frontiers
Heejung Chung, Ameeta Jaga, and Susan Lambert, representatives of the Work and Family Researchers Network, are editing a special issue of the journal Community, Work & Family. We seek submissions that offer new perspectives into advancing equality at work and home that address the persistent work-life challenges experienced by workers across the world. The aim of the special issue is to further knowledge on inequality at work and home and realistic pathways for reducing it, by attending to the intersectionally complex nature of work and family in diverse contexts.
Background information. It is an excellent time to take stock of what we are learning in the work and family field that can advance equality at work and home. The COVID-19 pandemic has widened recognized inequalities in our societies and raised awareness of new dimensions of inequality, such as the deepened requirements of care on working classes and the disproportionate load including the invisible emotional and mental labor carried by women during the pandemic. Around the world, work and family scholars and practitioners are conducting innovative research to capture the lived experiences of workers and families embedded within intersectional marginalization, including the confluence of race, ethnicity, gender identity, household composition, age, and economic structures. We hope to bring into focus these new voices and new lines of inquiry in this volume. Because the value of equality and justice at the work-family interface is crucial to quality of life and civil society, we also seek submissions that offer possibilities for change, particularly those that empirically assess work and family programs and policies intended to support workers and families in different socio-economic contexts.
Anticipated Content: We expect that this special issue will include 6-8 articles plus an introduction by the editors. Our goal is to accept a portfolio of articles that, together, offer diverse and novel perspectives on inequality at the work-family interface across the world. We hope that at least one paper will offer a conceptual framework for conducting comparative work and family research on the circumstances facing marginalized workers and families across nations. We especially welcome papers that address work and family inequalities in an intersectional manner or concentrate on the experiences of marginalized workers and families. Papers offering lessons for advancing equality at work and home might focus on effecting change through public policy, private employer action, collective action, or individual behavior.
- Earlier versions of the articles should have been (or is planned to be) presented at the 2020/21 WFRN Virtual Conference series OR at the 2018 WFRN Conference.
- We welcome papers employing quantitative and qualitative methods, or both.
- They should be no longer than 8000 words inclusive of tables, references, figure captions, footnotes, endnotes.

Timeframe:
- We will begin accepting papers December 15, 2020.
- The deadline for submission is January 30, 2021.
- We anticipate completing the review of manuscripts by April 15, 2021, if not earlier.
- Revised manuscripts must be resubmitted by June 1, 2021.
- All manuscripts must be ready for publication by August 1, 2021.
- The special issue will be published in December 2021, but accepted articles will be made available earlier as online publications.
