Demographic shifts in life expectancy, family structure, and gendered patterns of employment converge to create new and ever-changing forms of social inequality. Sarah E. Patterson’s research is concerned with how, in this changing demographic environment, enduring norms and expectations around families and for individual family members function across three domains. These domains include: the demography of aging, health, and the life course; families and intergenerational inequality; and, gender inequality at the work and family nexus. Sarah’s projects cover a range of topics including attitudes, caregiving, dementia, and family structure. She was a Work and Family Researchers Network 2017-2018 Early Career Scholar and her work is currently funded by the NIA.
