LaToya Council’s research interests are race, gender, and class; work and family; health and wellness. LaToya’s current book project focuses on heterosexual Black middle-class couples with children, and how couples manage competing work and family demands. In the book, LaToya argues that marriage/romantic partnership represents a symbol of commitment, empathy, and care that Black middle class couples rely on to care for one another, as well as a resource to help manage integrated work and family demands stratified by race and gender inequality. Other research projects LaToya is involved with focuses on Black middle and upper-middle-class women’s use of placemaking as a form of self-care. Her future research project on placemaking and self-care will continue to use qualitative methods to understand more Black women’s use of place and space to as forms of care for themselves, their families, and communities at-large.
