Dr. Ocobock’s research combines family sociology with gender and sexualities studies. She is especially interested in how families shape, and are shaped by, gender inequality. She is currently investigating how couples navigate the competing demands of work and parenting during the COVID-19 pandemic. Her research examines how the crisis contributes to and/or alleviates gender inequalities in work-life balance. Her work is also driven by questions about how marriage shapes and constrains relationship aspirations, choices and experiences. She is writing a book, under contract with the University of Chicago Press, which examines how lesbian, gay, bisexual, and queer (LGBQ) individuals experienced gaining access to legal marriage.
